Karen Holmes

Karen Holmes takes a geographic, statistical approach to assess soil resources and environmental processes in agro-ecosystems.

Karen completed her Ph.D. in 2003 at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where her work focused on scaling and modeling of large area patterns in soil biogeochemical properties in the Brazilian Amazon.

A post-doc in marine science and management brought her to Perth in 2004, where she worked with an interdisciplinary team to develop novel methods for seafloor habitat mapping.

Karen joined the Centre of Ecohydrology in 2007 as a research officer with the Western Australian Department of Agriculture and Food and an adjunct research fellow of the School of Earth and Environment at The University of Western Australia.

Karen’s work with the Centre has brought her back to soil-landscape systems, and her current research interests include:

  • Sampling and monitoring design
  • Quantitative soil mapping
  • Geostatistical modeling and environmental spatial analysis
  • Large-area mapping and scaling issues
  • Error and uncertainty in geographic analyses
  • Marine benthic modeling and spatial prediction

Karen's UWA staff profile includes her publications.
